Punjab to launch Safe City project in Katcha areas

The Punjab government has decided to launch a Lahore-style Safe City project in the province's riverine "Katcha" areas to curb crime and enhance surveillance in some of the most challenging terrains. Official sources revealed that the initiative aims to tackle the unique geographical and security issues of the Katcha belt, which comprises river islands, dense forests and vast sugarcane fields that often provide hideouts for criminal elements. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has prepared a comprehensive feasibility report outlining the proposed operational framework. The report notes that thick sugarcane crops offer natural cover to outlaws, while unreliable mobile network connectivity in certain areas further hampers effective law enforcement. To address these challenges, the project will deploy advanced surveillance technologies, including thermal and taser-equipped drones for round-the-clock monitoring. Thermal imaging cameras will facilitate effective night-time surveillance, while modern vehicle tracking systems will be installed to monitor suspicious movement in real time. Officials said an integrated control room will coordinate operations, enabling immediate response to incidents. Solar-powered surveillance installations are also planned to ensure uninterrupted coverage in remote areas where electricity infrastructure is limited. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs676 million.
